UN Sustainable Development Goals

We are committed to shaping the future of aquaculture to support the Sustainable Development Agenda.

Through our core values and mission to contribute to a sustainable aquaculture future, we aim to support one or more of the 17 SDGs with every action taken

While we contribute to many of the SDGs directly or indirectly, those to which we make the most significant contributions are highlighted below:

By improving food productivity in aquaculture, the availability of nutritious food for a growing global population increases. Our solutions are tailored for a range of species, addressing the needs of developing and developed markets, and thus contribute to safeguarding global food supply.

By producing a range of species, the needs of different markets can be met with healthy, nutritious food. We support a diverse workforce and local communities, ensuring the well-being of our people is a priority by promoting both physical and mental welfare.

Read how we support good health and well-being in our communities:

Our solutions improve resource efficiency in aquaculture, which already has a lower environmental impact than other animal proteins, reducing the carbon footprint. We are also committed to reducing our own footprint and integrating climate considerations into our decision-making. Additionally, since we are positioned at the start of the value chain, these trickle through into our customer’s environmental footprint.

We have a strong focus on the health and welfare of fish and shrimp. Our dedication extends across our own operations and through our products and services, which include products promoting reduced antibiotic use, certified sourcing of marine ingredients and an award-winning water purification system, CleanTreat®, that removes medicines from treatment water to ensure environmental protection. We thus create solutions which contribute to a healthier life below water.

We recognize our diverse community and workforce and are committed to ensuring the inclusion and support for all. We have processes in place to support this and are continuously looking to initiate dialogue and action regarding how we can do more. We know that enabling a sense of belonging where people work together comes first, and work to create and environment that values the different contributions that a diverse workforce brings, as well as one where everyone has a voice that is heard and amplified.

To read how we create a sense of belonging at Benchmark:

We promote decent economic work and growth through our collaboration with our clients and suppliers, as well as through our internal operations and employees. We have policies and processes in place, such as an anti-slavery policy, which we take extremely seriously as a responsible operator. As a global operator, we are both an employer as well as a supplier to an industry which feeds developing regions, encouraging both decent work and economic growth. The employment we create, and the development of our employees, contributes to economic growth in our communities.

Other notable goals which we support through our actions are the following:

We recognize the increasing dependency and necessity for clean, high-quality water as the global population grows. To ensure a conscious and sustainable management of this resource, we have conducted a risk assessment to ascertain that our operations do not impact on water access in our communities, in addition to measuring potable water consumption at our sites.

Innovation is one of our core values. Our work is built upon, and fosters, innovation to create efficacious solutions to progress sustainable aquaculture. We continuously invest in research and innovation to be able to create solutions that drive sustainability in aquaculture. We also look for the most responsible production methods and aim to provide energy efficient infrastructure.

We are guided by our Code of Conduct and governance framework to maintain high standards in our operations. Our policies promote an efficient and responsible framework towards our use of natural resources, as well as towards waste and recycling. Together with our missions and values, we aim to bring a sustainable consumption and production reality to the aquaculture industry whilst contributing to food security.

Collaboration is one of our core values. We believe in collaboration and partnership to drive progress towards our mission of improving sustainability. We partner with several leading research institutes and customers to develop new solutions and, as a leader in our industry, we participate in industrywide organisations and initiatives.

The Shanghai Declaration

We have proudly pledged our support for the Shanghai Declaration which outlines a roadmap to optimise aquaculture’s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Our statement of support sets out our commitments towards an industry that embraces the UN Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that our strategy contributes towards aquaculture being a sustainable solution to key development challenges.
