Environmental Systems Manager in the UK, Natasha Connor, discusses her experience of working as a woman in the Aquaculture industry.
Why do you think it is important for women to work in STEM careers?
Women bring their own unique experiences and perspectives to a team. A diverse and inclusive workforce is proven to create happier and more effective employees, and greater innovation. With the challenges and complexities faced in STEM industries and today’s world, we need women to be involved in finding the solutions!
Can you name a woman in the scientific sphere who inspires you?
All the amazing women I work with at Benchmark, to name a few! The CEO of IEMA Sarah Mukherjee is doing an amazing job at leading and supporting improvement in so many areas of the Environment and Sustainability arena.
What do you love most about your job?
I really love working with such a diverse global team, in an advancing industry. It’s amazing that even though our colleagues are on different time zones and in different countries, we all strive to work together towards our common goals.
For me personally, it’s great to see Benchmarks leaders committed to progressing our Sustainability performance, and I love working in this space.
How have you experienced being a woman in the science sector?
I began my career at 18 in a heavily male dominated industry, which could be quite intimidating at times! For years I couldn’t access PPE that fit and have experienced sexism and ageism. Fortunately, I have also had many great male and female mentors and allies throughout my career, guiding and supporting my journey.
The best piece of advice I could give to girls or women looking to move into the science sector would be to dive into the deep end! Go out there and gain some experience in a lab or on a site as early as possible. Seeing the sector in action is what ignited the passion for me.
