Antibiotic stewardship

Antimicrobials are essential to veterinary and human medicine to treat disease but each use of increases the risk of selection for resistant bacteria.

This is why Benchmark supports the ‘3R’s’ framework of ‘Replacing, Reducing and Refining’ antibiotic use.

  1. Reduce: the annual usage of antimicrobial agents in animal agriculture, per unit of livestock produced (mg/PCU), whilst preserving animal health and welfare
  2. Replace: the use of antimicrobials with sustainable solutions such as vaccination, biosecurity and improved husbandry practices
  3. Refine: the use of antimicrobial agents in animal agriculture, by ensuring the responsible and informed selection and administration of products to animals that have a clinical indication for treatment
